NGL Energy Partners is a diversified midstream service provider that delivers essential solutions across the energy value chain. With operations spanning water solutions, crude oil logistics, and natural gas liquids, NGL supports producers, refiners, and commercial customers across the United States. The company’s scale, breadth of services, and commitment to operational excellence have positioned it as a trusted partner to the energy industry. As NGL continues to evolve and grow, it remains focused on driving efficiencies across its assets and finding innovative ways to improve financial and operational performance.

5 began serving NGL in 2019, providing strategic support for all matters related to electricity procurement. Over the years, 5’s team of energy advisors and analysts became deeply familiar with NGL’s facilities, operating patterns, and electricity usage trends. While the initial scope of work centered exclusively on procurement, 5’s ongoing data monitoring and analysis revealed anomalies in the company’s usage patterns. These irregularities prompted a deeper examination of several facilities’ load profiles to better understand how and when electricity was being consumed in the field.

As 5’s engineering team and market analysts conducted these evaluations, they quickly identified a meaningful opportunity: several NGL facilities possessed inherent load flexibility that made them strong candidates for participation in Demand Response (DR) programs. These programs provide financial incentives to large electricity consumers who can reduce usage during periods of peak demand. For companies with operational agility and energy-intensive processes, such as NGL, this can create substantial financial upside with limited operational disruption.

After confirming the opportunity, 5 briefed NGL’s leadership team and operational stakeholders on the findings. The presentation highlighted the magnitude of the benefit, illustrating how participation in Demand Response could generate new revenue streams while simultaneously reducing transmission charges. For a company that had historically viewed electricity as a necessary cost of doing business, the idea that they could turn this expense into an asset that could produce measurable revenue was highly compelling.

Within just one week of the initial meeting, NGL assembled a detailed list of facilities capable of curtailment along with an estimated measure of their potential load reduction. The company identified 30 MW of responsive load in ERCOT and an additional 10 MW in the Southwest Power Pool (SPP). This mobilization reflected both their commitment to operational excellence and the strength of 5’s analysis in demonstrating the economic value of participation.

NGL’s leadership team took the initiative to develop curtailment strategies that aligned with the realities of daily field operations. Their team made operational adjustments that allowed them to respond to peak demand events without compromising service levels or their ability to meet customer needs. Their internal coordination and disciplined approach ensured that curtailment could be executed safely, reliably, and consistently.

The results from their first year of Demand Response enrollment have exceeded expectations. Through 2025, NGL has successfully performed during 100% of scheduled Demand Response events and met all 4CP curtailment requirements. This flawless performance is projected to generate approximately $1.15M in net financial benefit in both DR revenue and 4CP related savings, an extraordinary outcome for a first-year DR participant and a powerful illustration of what can be achieved when operational flexibility aligns with a sophisticated energy strategy.

Doug White, EVP of Water Solutions for NGL, summarized the partnership by saying, “5 has been a great partner for NGL in both procurement and in showing us how to monetize our assets. I know I can count on them and my energy advisor to always give me great and innovative advice.”

5 is proud to support NGL Energy Partners and to work alongside a company that embraces innovation, operational adaptability, and data-driven decision-making. Together, the teams have transformed what was once viewed solely as an operating cost into a meaningful financial opportunity, strengthening NGL’s competitive position while demonstrating the true value of strategic energy management.
