Client Spotlight Brightview Senior Living

Brightview Senior Living was founded in 1999, built on the idea that a great place to work is a great place to live. Today Brightview builds, owns, and operates 45 senior living communities in eight states along the East Coast: Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia. Brightview communities offer residential apartments for active seniors who are independent and those seniors who require varying degrees of assistance due to Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

As their portfolio of properties expanded across different states and utilities, the operations team at Brightview realized that it was important to have a partnership with a national energy advisory firm with experience in every energy market. In 2018, Brightview Senior Living engaged 5 to manage the electricity and natural gas procurement for their facilities throughout the Mid Atlantic and Northeast. Since energy is a significant expense across the portfolio, it was important to develop a procurement strategy that reduced exposure to volatile energy prices and customized to the unique rules of the electricity and natural gas markets in each state. 5 took a comprehensive look across Brightview’s portfolio to purchase energy in a way that was tailored for each specific facility. Different energy products and structures were used as new facilities were added to the portfolio and as market and energy regulatory conditions changed.

In addition to procurement, 5 supports the team at Brightview by facilitating energy contract assignments and accounting updates as new properties are acquired. The team at Brightview turns to 5’s expertise in resolving billing issues and completing their transition using only electronic invoices. Brightview also works with 5 as they become more sustainable. The two companies work together to establish sustainability goals and evaluate opportunities to install solar arrays at facilities where incentives are most advantageous.

5 is privileged to support and work with Brightview Senior Living, which is committed to creating vibrant senior living communities, and keeping their residents happy and healthy, while providing the support they need to make the most of every day.
